Relative Motion’s commission from The Space – Tosca VR - beautifully demonstrated their digital-first, 360-first approach. Built with complete awareness of the available canvas surrounding them, it presented an environment to be explored, rather than simply translating a proscenium arch into the audience’s living rooms. It also illustrated the importance of recognising the audience’s place within the staging, how their attention needs to be directed (and rewarded) just as importantly as the actions of the performers.... With the performing arts sector currently excluded from presenting live performances many companies are beginning to explore the potential of these remote immersive experiences, and the skills and experience of companies like Relative Motion has never been more urgently needed.

As a professional creating immersive material for the architectural space, I appreciate not only the creative but the technical performance in Relative Motion's work. RM's team and approach to the process of creating content, shows how their theatrical background uniquely positions them and shapes their understanding, to build compelling works that place the audience, at times literally, central to the performance. As an ardent consumer of immersive content, RM's work stands out as striking.

My experience is that the best ideas come when a creative vision is married to technological innovation. Relative Motion are a great example of that. They have a real understanding of storytelling and audience agency, developed through many years of theatrical expertise, and a sure-footed approach to virtual reality. To scale, immersive technology needs more engaging and exciting content of the kind that Relative Motion are delivering.

Relative Motion consistently delivers beautifully executed virtual theatre. Expert technological knowledge, creative vision and flair combined with professional performance have brought us up close and personal experiences to rival the live theatre environment. The development of virtual theatre is finding its direction and Relative Motion are leading the way, not only by setting the highest standards in technical presentation but by devising imaginative scenarios to compliment classic timeless drama. We have seen what they can do with scenes from Shakespeare and songs from opera and look forward to whatever comes next.

I worked with Relative Motion on the Tosca VR project. Throughout the process I was impressed by how the team combined a knowledge of theatre best practice with a real understanding of the needs and challenges of the VR format. Their ability to deploy more traditional immersive theatrical techniques such as how to choreograph people’s attention around a space provides a really valuable asset in terms of spatial storytelling. That, combined with a truly audience-first attitude, means I always look forward to seeing the immersive stories they choose to tell.
