In 2019, Relative Motion won a coveted place on the Digital Catapult 5G Testbed in Brighton. This government innovation agency, designed to develop SME’s working in the tech sector, required us to create a compelling, first-to-market use-case for the new 5G communications standard that will be unveiled in the UK over the next few years.
With the support of Arts Council England, Relative Motion is developing a production model for the hi-definition live-streaming of narrative dramatic content made for VR space, facilitated by 5G’s mega bandwidth and ultra-low latency capabilities. Think “NT Live” made for VR, with performance created with a central, single audience member at the core.
Relative Motion is a company preoccupied by liveness (presence, agency, empathy), authenticity and immediacy. 5G unlocks potential for extraordinarily truthful and moving storytelling in real time virtual space; low latency and high bandwidth provide an opportunity to connect with an audience in a meaningful, vibrant way through technology over great distances. 5G permits robust broadcast of 360 material at a resolution beyond 8K and high fidelity live reception in 5G enabled VR headsets, smartphones and tablets.
Our production model for live streamed performance is aimed at theatre and arts organisations, the heritage sector and commercial enterprises. We offer them creative and technical skill sets and a partnership opportunity that enables them to use VR to tell their stories, be they existing works or bespoke creations, in real-time once 5G networks are widely available. In the meantime, this same production model can be executed over high-volume data links.
We know that theatre, arts and heritage organisations are prime candidates for using VR to advance their respective interests and that the ecology of performance in virtual reality can be significantly stimulated by the international reputation of UK culture sector organisations, along with the respect, trust and loyalty they inspire. The government's Culture is Digital and Let’s Create reports have challenged organisations in this sector to expand their digital remits. Relative Motion is well placed to be the bridge between immersive technology and artistry - there’s a new performance space waiting to welcome audiences within.
We look forward to inviting audiences to “live the story, as it happens”.
